Pregnant and scared, Susie needed all our expert care
Susie’s story highlights how difficult giving birth and raising kittens can be for cats left unneutered, especially those who are already stressed and sensitive.
Susie sadly experienced birth complications and lost two of her three kittens soon after arriving at BCDH. We believe that the loss of her kittens may have been caused by a stressful situation in her previous home and the added stress of being moved to our catteries.
After this difficult birth our team had to monitor her last kitten carefully as mothers often reject or even kill their kittens when stressed. In the end we hand-reared him once he was 5 weeks old. Patch grew strong and healthy and was happily adopted.
Already anxious around people, it took a lot of work from our behaviour and animal care teams to undo Susie’s trauma and rebuild her trust in people.
Part of her rehabilitation was to place her in a foster home, to give her space and quiet.
In the weeks she was there, she formed a strong bond and, especially with her history, when her fosterer requested to adopt we agreed it would be the best future for Susie.
Susie is now living a relaxed and quiet life, finding all the best spots for her quiet naps and is a happy cat.
