Fourteen weeks to trust

Seven-year-old Dora arrived at Bath Cats and Dogs Home following the death of her owner. Nervous, grumbly and overwhelmed by the sudden change, she became so unsettled that she stopped eating properly.

Dora was given anxiety medication and placed in long-term foster care, where she could recover in a quiet home environment. Her progress came slowly, through small but precious moments.

After two weeks, a home camera captured Dora relaxing when she thought nobody was watching. By week six, she had started playing shortly after her foster carer left the room, rather than waiting to check that nobody was nearby.

At ten weeks, Dora was brave enough to take a treat. Four weeks later, she climbed onto a lap. Once she made that first leap of trust, her confidence began to grow quickly.

Dora is now thriving in her permanent home. She sleeps on her family’s bed, sits on their laps, plays with her toys and has successfully come off her medication.

Her adopters told us: “Dora is wonderful. She is very affectionate and has blossomed into a confident and contented cat. She loves her cuddles and often expresses her happiness by rolling on her back and purring.”

Dora’s story is a reminder not to overlook the nervous cat hiding at the back. With patience, understanding and a safe home, fear can give way to the most loving companionship.
