After losing an eye, Sardine is finding comfort and confidence in foster care

When three-year-old Sardine arrived at Bath Cats and Dogs Home in February, one of his eyes was so badly scratched and ulcerated that it could not be saved. He was also suffering from a painful ear infection, and our veterinary team began treating him straight away.

Sardine’s eye was removed and the operation healed well. But afterwards, he continued to behave as though the missing eye was causing him pain.

Our veterinary team believes damaged nerves may still be sending pain signals to his brain, even though the original source of the pain has gone. This is known as neuropathic pain. Sardine is now receiving medication to keep him comfortable, and the team is carefully adjusting the dose to find the lowest amount he needs.

He is likely to need this medication for life, but fortunately it can easily be added to his food. Most importantly, Sardine is doing much better.

Sardine is currently being fostered by Ali, one of our Animal Care team members, where he has settled happily into home life. He follows Ali from room to room, loves a fuss and is quite content to curl up nearby on a soft chair.

His curious side has also come to the fore. Sardine loves ping-pong balls, teaser toys and watching Cat TV featuring birds. Closed doors, cupboards and fridges all deserve investigating, while butter and other dairy products hold a particular fascination.

Sardine is friendly with visitors and enjoys attention, although he will sometimes give a gentle nip when he has had enough. Ali also keeps a careful eye on doors, as his curiosity can make him keen to find out what is on the other side.

For now, Sardine will remain in foster care while we continue managing his medication and learning more about what he needs. He is not yet available for adoption, but we hope to have another update to share when the time is right.
