Seren

Cats, Rehabilitate

A small cat with a big mystery!

If you walk into the cattery on a quiet afternoon, there’s a good chance you’ll find Seren stretched out in a sunny spot, watching the world with those gentle, intelligent eyes of hers. She’s a calm, affectionate soul who loves company - though in classic cat fashion, she prefers to decide when she wants the fuss. Sometimes she’ll curl up beside you for companionship without needing hands-on attention; other times she’ll trot straight over for a head rub and a chat.

Seren has become a bit of a favourite at BCDH, not just because of her lovely nature, but because of the journey she’s been on since arriving with us in early July.

Skinny black cat

A small cat with a big mystery

When Seren first came to us, she was tiny - just 2.7kg, when she should have been closer to 4kg - and drinking and weeing far more than a young cat should. She was bright, friendly and absolutely adored mealtimes, but something wasn’t quite right.

Our vets began investigating. Blood tests were good. No kidney problems. No diabetes. No pregnancy. No obvious issues at all… except for the excess drinking and weight issues.

It led our team to suspect something incredibly rare: diabetes insipidus - a condition that affects the way her body regulates water. (Fun fact: despite the name, it has nothing to do with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.)

To confirm this, Seren was given a trial of a medication, and slowly but surely, her drinking settled and she began to feel more like her healthy young self. She started putting on weight, playing more, and - very importantly - perfecting her impressive high-speed run through her cat flap at mealtimes. (the cattery team can confirm this remains one of her greatest talents!)

By November, her tests had improved enough for our vets to give her the all-clear to look for her new home.

Ready for her next chapter

Today, Seren is a happy young cat who simply needs daily medication, a certain diet and a watchful eye on her drinking. Her condition is lifelong, but very manageable - and she’s absolutely worth the tiny bit of extra effort.

And you can see the difference - she has put on weight, and her coat has grown into a fluffy lion's mane!

Seren has come a long way - from an underweight mystery case to a happy, healthy young cat bursting with personality. Now all she needs is a family to love her, enjoy her quirks, admire her lunchtime zoomies, and give her the secure future she deserves.
