Nanook

Big dogs need loving homes too

We are seeing an increase in larger dogs, like Nanook, arriving for rehoming and spending many months waiting for their forever homes – and he’s not alone. Nationally, rescue centres are reporting the same trend: RSPCA statistics for 2024 showed that bigger dogs take at least twice as long (60+ days) to find a home compared to small dogs (30+ days).

Nanook has now been in our care for over 100 days – more than triple the average stay for small dogs.

Why are big dogs getting overlooked?

Increases in the cost-of-living have hit pet owners hard, and large dogs have borne the brunt of this shift. From higher food bills to vet costs, bigger dogs can cost a little more to care for.  The RSPCA’s Pet Cost Calculator shows that big dogs cost from £93 per month whereas small dogs cost from £62 per month to care for.

For some owners, unexpected life changes – like having a new baby, health issues, or moving house – can make it harder to manage a strong, energetic dog.

Another factor is the rise in popularity of large breeds on social media. It’s easy to fall for an Insta-famous Husky or a goofy Great Dane without fully understanding what these breeds need in day-to-day life. Sadly, some bigger dogs are abandoned or handed over to rescue centres when the reality sets in.

This is where Nanook’s story begins.

Meet Nanook – our gentle giant with a unique soul

Nanook, a 1 year 10-month-old Siberian Husky, was found abandoned near Bath earlier this year by a member of the public. When he arrived late one evening in April he was underweight and wary of the world – it was clear he had lived in a home before. But something had gone wrong.

Now, after more than 100 days with us, Nanook is patiently waiting for the right person to see beyond his size and into his heart.

Nanook is full of character. He’s a sensitive, intelligent boy who forms strong emotional bonds – not just with people, but with his beloved toys, which he uses for comfort in new or uncertain situations. He’s not a cuddle-on-the-sofa type of dog; he prefers his own space and needs time to build trust. But once you’ve earned it, you’ll have a loyal, one-of-a-kind companion.

His perfect home? A calm, structured environment with adults or older teenagers (14+), a secure garden, and no other pets although he could have confident doggy visitors. Breed experience is helpful but not essential – what matters most is patience, understanding, and a willingness to advocate for Nanook’s needs.

Why adopt a big dog like Nanook?

Big dogs make wonderful pets. They often thrive on routine, enjoy being active companions, and have huge personalities to match their size. The key is finding the right match – not just any home, but the right home.

Adopting a large dog from us means you’re never alone. Nanook comes fully neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and treated for fleas and worms. He’s been assessed by our behaviour team, and his new family will receive expert advice on grooming, training, and settling in. We also provide four weeks of free pet insurance to give adopters peace of mind.

Staying open to all sizes and breeds

Many people assume that big dogs are harder to manage. But a dog’s size doesn’t determine their suitability for your home – it’s all about the right match of the animal’s needs and your needs as an adopter. Some bigger dogs like Salukis and Lurchers like short bursts of exercise or ‘zoomies’ and then sleep and relax most of the day.

Our rehoming team works a bit like a dating agency – carefully matching each dog with an owner who can meet their needs and love them for who they are. We encourage potential adopters to research the needs of different breeds, think honestly about their lifestyle, and remain open to dogs of all sizes.

Many people typically look for smaller dogs, worried they may struggle with a larger breed. But what if your ideal companion is bigger?

For the right person, Nanook will be the perfect fit. If you’ve got the time, space and heart for a dog with quirks and character, Nanook could be your next best friend.

Let’s help Nanook find his forever home – and prove that big dogs truly are worth the wait.

Two ways you can help

Adopt: Nanook is still waiting. If you think you could be his person, or the right fit for another large-breed dog – contact our rehoming team by sending in an adoption application form found at The adoption journey

Donate: Large dogs like Nanook cost more to care for. It costs the charity around £1,197 per month to house and support a dog. That’s £3,500+ for dogs who stay over 90 days like Nanook.

Every donation helps us provide the food, training and veterinary care they need while they wait for a new home. To make a donation and help give big dogs the love they deserve visit Bath Cats & Dogs Home.
