From frightened stray to pampered prince: Furby’s journey to comfort and companionship

When Furby arrived at Bath Cats and Dogs Home in May 2024, he was a far cry from the calm, confident cat he is today. Found living rough on the streets, this distinctive white cat with his black ‘fringe’, half-moustache and tail had been scavenging through bin bags to survive and sleeping beneath cars for shelter. He was underweight, flea-ridden and covered in old wounds - the toll of life without a safe place to call home.

A wary start: Furby’s first days at BCDH

Furby was very nervous when he first arrived. He hid away for most of the day and would flinch or flee if approached. But despite his fear, he never showed aggression. The team could see he was a sweet-natured cat underneath all the anxiety - he just needed time and space. With gentle care, comforting routines and a steady supply of his favourite treat (fresh chicken!), Furby slowly began to come out of his shell. By early July, he was even starting to ask for fuss - a turning point in his recovery.

Veterinary checks revealed the extent of what he had endured. Alongside being underweight and flea-bitten, Furby had sore, ulcerated patches of skin likely caused by overgrooming due to stress. Thanks to prompt treatment and a stress-free environment, these began to heal, and his confidence continued to grow.

A second chance: finding his forever family

In September 2024, Furby’s life changed completely when he was adopted by a loving family. From the moment he arrived in his new home, he decided he belonged there - quite literally letting himself out of the “safe room” within two hours to explore the house and curl up on a lap for a nap. Since that day, Furby has made himself very much at home.

Now more of an indoor gentleman, Furby enjoys short adventures in the back garden, often joined by Molly, the feisty older rescue cat from next door who keeps him in line. He’s rarely out of sight and always comes running to greet his humans when they return home. His favourite activities include snoozing on laps, chasing balls across the floor, and sliding around on cardboard like a kitten. And yes - he’s still a food fiend who would do anything for a Dreamie!

A happy ending: Furby flourishes with love

Furby’s new family describe him as the easiest cat they’ve ever had - “an absolute gift”. Whether it’s his habit of walking upright on his back legs, his gentle affection, or his playful energy, Furby has brought joy and comfort into their lives. He sleeps on the bed every night, spends his days purring on laps, and still uses the bed BCDH gave him - a small reminder of just how far he’s come.

From a frightened stray surviving on scraps to a beloved and pampered pet, Furby’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of rescue animals. All he needed was patience, understanding and a home that saw his potential.
