Frost’s story: learning to trust, one gentle step at a time
This four-year-old Shih Tzu had been rescued from a home with more than 100 dogs. Although she was physically healthy, everyday experiences most dogs take for granted - wearing a lead, hearing unfamiliar sounds or meeting new people - were completely new to her. Even gentle pressure from a collar would make her panic. It was clear that Frost needed time, patience and understanding.

Frost moved into the care of one of our experienced foster families, where she could adjust to life at her own pace. At first, everything felt frightening. She startled at sudden noises, preferred to eat alone, and was especially wary of new people.
Frost formed her first bonds with the children in the home, whose calm presence and steady routines helped her feel safe. As her trust grew, so did her confidence. One evening, when visitors arrived, Frost surprised everyone by choosing to walk into the room and settle quietly nearby. She was still cautious, but she stayed. It was a small step that showed just how far she had come.
With support from our behaviour team, Frost learned to wear a harness and received medication to help ease her anxiety. As she relaxed, her affectionate side began to shine through. Once she trusted someone, she loved being close, curling up beside them or gently following them from room to room.

After around three months in foster care, Frost was ready for the next step. In December, she found a forever home with an adopter who understands her needs and is helping her confidence continue to grow.
Frost’s story shows how foster care can transform a dog’s life. With time and kindness, she discovered that homes can be safe and people can be trusted.
