Serenity’s fresh start

When Serenity arrived at Bath Cats and Dogs Home, she was around eight years old and ready for a fresh start.

An ex-racing greyhound, Serenity had several old racing scars, a painful wound on her neck that needed treatment, and dental problems that meant a number of teeth had to be removed. She also had a cyst checked for cancer, which thankfully turned out to be benign.

With veterinary care, patience and kindness, Serenity began to feel better. But kennels were difficult for her. She adored human company and found it hard being away from people, so she was given medication to help with her anxiety and went to stay in a foster home with one of our regular volunteers.

In foster, Serenity began to relax. She could enjoy the comfort of a home, a peaceful routine and the company she loved so much. Before long, she found her forever family.

Serenity quickly settled into her new life. Her adopters described her as “a delight to be around”, and she soon made herself at home with Gaius, the family’s Maltese, and Neo the guinea pig, who she now happily keeps company by sunbathing near his cage.

Since being adopted, Serenity has continued to blossom. She enjoys her walks, loves being close to her family, and has now come off her calming medication. Her tail wags more and more, and she even has a big garden where she can enjoy safe greyhound zoomies.

Serenity’s story is a lovely reminder that older dogs can flourish when given the chance.

They may arrive with a few more miles behind them, but they also bring gentleness, gratitude, character and a huge amount of love.

Thanks to the care she received and the kindness of the people who believed in her, Serenity is now living the happy, settled life she always deserved.
