Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Shirley

Posted byLindie Kramers | Dogs, Volunteering

Meet Shirley, one of our wonderful dog walking volunteers.

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do, and Shirley is a shining example of the dedication, kindness and community spirit that makes Bath Cats & Dogs Home such a special place. Now in her thirteenth year of volunteering, Shirley has supported countless animals on their journey to finding a loving home.

Please tell us a little bit about your life outside of BCDH

I was a nurse at the hospital in Bath for 30 years and for the last 20 years of my career, I worked as a colorectal nurse specialist. Outside of volunteering here, I enjoy gardening, socialising and travelling. I haven’t travelled as much recently but it’s still one of my favourite things to do. One of the nicest things about coming to BCDH is the social side, spending time with fellow volunteers, staff and of course the animals.

How long have you been volunteering at BCDH?

This is my thirteenth year.

What do you do here?

I walk dogs, which really helps to socialise them. Often the dogs that come in are strays and many haven’t been treated well, so spending time with them makes a big difference. I also go into the cattery and cuddle cats, which helps them feel more comfortable and confident around people.

Why did you want to volunteer for BCDH?

I originally volunteered in a local village shop with a café - but after working with human beings for many years, I decided I’d like to spend some time with animals. I applied here to do dog walking and the rest is history.

What do you most enjoy about volunteering?

Generally, it’s feeling useful and feeling that you’re making a difference. Many of these animals haven’t been well treated, so being able to give them time and comfort is really important, especially as the staff are so busy. I also really enjoy meeting people and socialising with other volunteers and staff.

I’m also involved in fundraising activities such as the pub quiz. For some years we held it at the George - and more recently at the Globe between Bath and Bristol. We organise a raffle and keep the quiz entry fees to raise money for the Home. It’s fun, social and even though we don’t usually win, we always enjoy taking part.

What would you like to say to anyone considering volunteering for BCDH?

I would say do it. It’s extremely good for you, mentally and physically, and it doesn’t have to be too strenuous. You do need to register and have training, especially for dog walking, but it’s not difficult. Volunteering can give you a lot of pleasure and a real sense of purpose.
