Fireworks prep

Welfare

Get ready for fireworks season

Now’s a great time to start gentle preparations to help your cat or dog feel safe and calm when the bangs begin:

???? Try a pheromone plug-in and pop a reminder in your diary to start it 2–3 days before the noisy nights.

???? Stock up on their favourite chews or Kong stuffers.

???? Thundershirts can give a comforting “hug” to some dogs.

????? Create a cosy den with a few blankets over a table, chairs, or a cardboard box which can make a snug hideaway. Add blankets to your sofa or their bed now so they smell familiar and safe.

???? Check local display dates and plan a cosy night in with a movie, treats, and maybe the BBC Radio Pet Playlist to help keep things calm.

If your pet finds fireworks especially hard - panting, drooling, or trembling - we recommend speaking to your vet. They can offer short-term help and guide you toward a behaviourist for longer-term support if needed. Find a qualified behaviourist here: apbc.org.uk/find-an-apbc-member
