We highly recommend using a harness for walking, rather than clicking your lead to their collar.
Comfort and preventing injury. A dog’s neck is sensitive, and any pull could damage their windpipe and strain their neck muscles.
Safety. A harness is more difficult to escape from.
Handle options. For small and medium dogs, a lifting strap can be very handy for hands-off restraint, manoeuvring or getting into a car.
There are two styles of harnesses which are defined by how you put them onto your dog. Step in, or over-the-head. Choose the style depending on any worries your dog has with handling paws or having items passed over their head.
Strap up! For the wrigglers and those with skinny stomachs (lurchers, and often terriers and beagles too), we recommend a three-strap harness to make sure they cannot escape by backing out.
Here are some brands to consider.
Pets at Home 3 Peaks Excursion
Snootiful Hound escape-proof and a lighweight 'summer' harness
Ruffwear Ridgeline and Web master
When you adopt, we’ll provide measurements for your rescue dog before adoption, otherwise see the brand guidelines. You will probably need to measure the thickest part of the neck, widest part of the chest and around the stomach.
