World Animal Day 2025

World Animal Day – did you know about the 5 animal welfare needs?

Every cat and dog deserves to feel safe, healthy and loved – not just on World Animal Day, but every single day. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 sets out five basic welfare needs that every pet should have met. These are the building blocks of a happy, healthy life for cats and dogs.

Here’s what they are – and what they mean for your pets:

1. Somewhere safe to live

Your cat or dog needs the right kind of home. That means:

  • Enough space to move around comfortably
  • A warm, dry and safe place to sleep
  • Quiet spots to relax when they need a break

Whether it’s a cosy bed for a dog or a high perch or hidey-hole for a cat, the right environment is essential.

2. A healthy diet

Cats and dogs need:

  • The right food for their age, breed and health needs
  • Fresh, clean water available at all times
  • Not too much food, and not too little!

Feeding your pet well helps prevent illness and keeps them in good shape, inside and out.

3. The chance to behave naturally

Every animal has natural behaviours they need to express – and stopping them from doing so can cause stress or illness. For example:

  • Cats need to scratch, climb and explore
  • Dogs need to walk, sniff and play

Make sure your pet has the space, toys and environment to just be themselves.

4. The right company

  • Dogs enjoy companionship with people, and many enjoy time with other dogs.
  • Most cats enjoy human company, some cats also enjoy being around other cats.

It’s all about knowing your pet’s social needs and making sure they have the right kind of company – or their own space if they prefer that.

5. Staying healthy

This one might seem obvious, but it’s so important. Cats and dogs must:

  • Be protected from pain, suffering and injury
  • See a vet if they’re unwell

Even small signs of illness or discomfort should never be ignored, and you can make sure they have preventative care like vaccinations, flea/worm treatments and dental checks.

When pets’ needs aren’t met

At Bath Cats & Dogs Home we see first-hand what happens when these basic needs are neglected. Sometimes owners are able to turn things around with the right support, but sadly we also take in animals who need to be rehomed for their own safety. This year alone, five cases of neglect or abuse – plus 41 other cats and dogs – have come to us via the RSPCA Inspectorate.
