Important rabbit health news

November 2017

If you are a rabbit owner you may have heard on the news recently about a new, deadly disease affecting rabbits in the UK. This disease is known as Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease 2 (RVHD2) and is becoming an increasing concern in our area. It is a new strain of the classic RVHD1 and it can affect rabbits of all ages.

Your rabbit's normal vaccine protects against RVHD1 and Myxomatosis, both of which have been prevalent in the UK for decades. However, it does not appear to offer protection to this new strain, a disease which may have come over from France.

We recommend you contact your vet to make an appointment for your rabbit to have the new vaccine. Your normal RVHD1 and myxomatosis combined vaccine should still be given annually and there needs to be at least 2 weeks in between this and the new vaccine.

More information can be found on the Rabbit Welfare Association website.
