31/01/2012 - Bath's Dog Control Order - our view
As the area’s leading rescuing and re-homing centre, Bath Cats and Dogs Home is very aware of the problems a minority of irresponsible dog owners cause and welcome moves to improve this.
However we are very pleased to learn that Bath and North East Somerset Council has cancelled their planned implementation of a strict dog control order which would have punished the majority of dog owners who are responsible. Not to mention the restriction it placed on our staff and volunteers walking dogs that we have currently in our care within the immediate vicinity of the Home
We would be pleased to provide our expert knowledge and experience in this area to the council as part of any future discussions on dog control and the promotion of responsible dog (and pet) ownership.
We suggest key topics for future discussions include;-
• The importance of micro chipping (we offer a low cost service at BCDH). Amongst animals looking for a new home there are always a number of strays from the BANES area.
• The importance of neutering (we run an assisted scheme at BCDH)
• The importance of training and socialising dogs from an early age in order to reduce dog aggression (we run such courses at BCDH)
• The importance of researching breed characteristics before purchasing a dog. A dog should then only be chosen through a reputable breeder. However most preferable would be to adopt one of the thousands of unwanted dogs in the UK from a re-homing centre such as Bath Cats and Dogs Home.
Happy endings
