Vince’s Story

vinnie in snow

Do some of the dogs at the Home seem intimidating? We tell you everything we know about a dog – the good and the bad – but that doesn’t mean they won’t make great family dogs. Here is a story  about Vinnie, who would have been a terrible prospect on paper…

I had been desperate to get a dog for years and finally my partner and I had managed to get on the property ladder, so I eagerly started looking. I had never considered a German Shepard before, but when I read Vinnie’s horrific story online, I immediately had my heart set on providing him a home that he urgently needed.

On first meeting Vinnie, I was quite intimidated, however gradually over a month my partner and I built up a relationship with him and he started to trust us. On bringing him home he quickly showed aggression towards people and dogs, which made walks a nightmare and almost impossible for friends and family to come to our house. With the cruelty Vinny had endured I could understand why he was displaying this nervous aggression, but this did not make it any easier to deal with. With the help of the Bath Cats & Dogs Home behaviourist, Steve, we persevered by using techniques that required positive association of people and dogs.

Six months on….
Vinnie is doing great. He is off the lead on walks all the time, socialises beautifully with all dogs and enjoys affection from everyone. He is very obedient and on calling his name he runs back to us instantly, his loving nature and loyalty are a credit to him. We will never truly know what cruelty he endured prior to the dogs home, but within the space of six months his perception of the world has changed and he no longer see people or dogs as a threat. We have since got Vinnie a friend, Rufus a Vizsla puppy, and the pair are now inseparable. I would like to thank everyone in the dogs home, and especially Steve for all the help and input you have given Vinnie to make him the happy dog he is today.

happy family

Can you imagine finding a new friend so fast? Two volunteers tell us the story of the shock of falling for one of our dogs…

Having adopted three fantastic dogs from Bath Cats and Dogs Home ten years ago – two German Shepherds and one Collie, our world was devastated when in April we lost Pippa, our 13 year old German Shepherd.

We had registered to do the Wag Walk but the dog we had requested was unavailable so by chance we were given Tisha, a lovely German Shepherd.   It was love at first sight and after a couple of weeks of Tisha getting to know us and our other two dogs, she became part of our family.

Thank you to all the staff for your hard work and the love you give to your animals.

Lomas in his new home

I am loving sleeping in my bed right now. I am shattered after walking for 1 Whole Hour, but I really enjoyed it because Amy (Parent No.3) was showing me how to feed the ducks!
As you probably know, I am a little bit naughty at times. Today, I turned my food bowl upside down and moved the SKY Box! I showed that I was sorry and Jo (Parent No.1) gave me big hugs and I will try and keep my temper when she works now. I was very excited today because Nina (Parent No.2) and Amy came to visit!
I have totally transformed since I have moved from ‘The Bath Dogs and Cats Home’. I have stopped being very stubborn on my walks. I think I have grown more loving, and I am losing lots of weight, because I have had lots of walks! Amy has took some pictures of me and her and we wanted to send them to you.
Who has taken my kennel now? Are my friends doing well and has anyone else found a new home? I have found a perfect one, and I am hopefully going to spend the rest of my life here. If we visit Bath anytime soon, I will tell my owners to see you, because I will give you HUMUGOUS hugs as I miss you lots.
I hope you miss me, as I miss you too.
Love you,
From Lomas xxxxx

> A lot of people have asked after Lomas, a lovely staffie who was with us for a while before finding his new owners. He took time out of his busy schedule to write to us (clever dog). We have Bull Breed Week from 12-18 July to celebrate our tough-looking dogs. Lomas’ story highlights that even though some dogs are with us for a long time, that doesn’t make them un-homeable, just special.

A lovely email and pictures from the new owners of Spencer

Herewith a couple of photos of Spencer settling in.  He’s still a bit nervous with strangers but in all other respects is absolutely fine – he bounds around the fields with great energy and jumps the local stream with great style.  We wonder whether there is a bit of greyhound or lurcher in the cross – this might explain why he is so long for his overall size; we plan to see if he will take to sailing – a dog lifejacket which accommodates a body length as high as 24″ coupled with a girth as low as 27″ took quite a bit of finding!

Bendy paws

A lovely story about one of our previous residents…

My partner and I have always been animal lovers, but when we bought our first home, a first floor flat, we assumed that there was no way we could adopt a furry friend. That was until we were told that the Bath Cats and Dogs Home often required suitable homes for indoor cats and upper floor flats were ideal.

We excitedly visited the cattery one weekend to find many indoor cats that needed re-homing. We were introduced to ‘Diablo,’ a cheeky white tom cat who was deaf, so needed to be kept safe inside. We fell in love with him instantly and were delighted to offer him a home. He moved in during August last year and made himself instantly at home! Due to being deaf, he is quite noisy and often meows very loudly – but it’s usually just because he’s enjoying his dinner or fancies a cuddle.

His favourite activities (other than sleeping and eating) are playing with cardboard boxes, attacking anything fluffy or feathery, chasing shadows and watching birds and the traffic go by from the windowsill.

He has become incredibly affectionate and likes nothing more than crawling onto your lap for a cuddle, or even a kiss if you’re lucky.

Curling up with Cassidy

asleep

An update on gorgeous cat Cassidy who was adopted from us last summer. She was four years old when she was adopted, her new owner tells us her story:

When I first bought Cass home, she was a nervous little thing who spent the first few days hiding under my bed and jumping whenever the front door went. However, on the fourth day, she crept out from under the bed and came for a cuddle. Since then her progress has been swift and she is now a friendly, relaxed creature who is gradually becoming more and more independent.

In October we moved out of Bath into the lovely village of Timsbury and this is a move that had done Cass a world of good. She spends most of her time either snoozing on the windowsill in my bedroom or out hunting and playing in the fields that surround the village.

I’m very grateful to have Cassidy as she has turned my house into a real home and I would be lost without her.

A dip into Cody & Jake’s new home

Friday, April 9th, 2010

in pond Cody and Jake are both settling into our home beautifully and in the short time they have been here have adapted wonderfully making it seem as if they have  always been here.

They love to travel in the landrover or tractor and have taken to accompaying us on our morning ride, which means a morning dip in he pond halfway round.

Ferbie, our other collie loves Jake and they have been inseperable, they have also met the dogs from our neighbouring farm and all went well. Cody’s herding instincts have come into  play and all the cows are being told exactly where to go and that makes a grand change.  horse

We love them both, thank you.
