I was abandoned with a broken leg

This is Tulip, a pretty saluki cross lurcher.

Soleful eyes? Check.

Fluffy ears? Check.

Four legs? Er, actually no.

Tulip was found abandoned with her leg shattered. We can only assume she was too expensive to fix, or useless for poaching or guarding, after having some sort of accident.

She was taken to a vets and had to have her leg amputated. With no owners claiming her, she came to us.

Imagine in one week losing your home, your owners and your leg and winding up in kennels with strange dogs and smells.

For the first week Tulip was withdrawn and reluctant to exercise and interact. Then she went through a phase of kicking back at everything, barking and growling at everyone to keep away. She was scared and unsure.

With patience and care from her animal carers and dedicated work experience girls like Hollie (pictured) Tulip is feeling more secure and happy. She even had her first groom and bath this week – look in the right-hand corner for the amount of hair that came off!

Although still nervous of men approaching her, she is bouncing back quickly and becoming a staff favourite. We have found that she loves sunbathing and belly rubs.

If you approach her kennel she may bark at you – try approaching slowly and sideways-on, and armed with small smelly treats! If she is unhappy with you being there, please back away and try again another day, we don’t want to push her too fast.

If you are interested in homing Tulip, please come in and meet her and speak to her animal carer.

Farewell to Smithy

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Smithy was with us at BCDH on and off for about seven years and was very much loved by all who knew him. He was a dog that did not like strangers and care had to be taken when getting to know him, but once a friend, you were never forgotten.

Due to his bad health, he was in constant pain with his arthritic hips and other age related problems, it was decided by all, including the vets, that as there was nothing else we could do for him medically, the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep. All of his friends and walkers came and paid their last respects the week before, including some of his past animal carers and he was finally laid to rest on Tuesday 27th April. It was all very peaceful, with those that knew and loved him there until the end; he was then buried in our cemetery.

Smithy was lucky enough to come to us, where we are happy to accommodate dogs with “slight issues”, as long as they are happy and healthy, I think it would be fair to say that no other home would have kept him for so long, but he was fine with us and had a very good life, being thoroughly indulged with treats, toys and new coats to keep him warm in the winter. The home will not be the same without him, but one thing is certain, we will never forget him.

The Boris I know

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Our dedicated dog walkers often walk the same dog and get to know them really well. Bob has been walking Boris the rottweiler, and has found him a handsome companion.

“Boris loves his routine……and walks excellently on a lead now, with a halti only attached as an insurance….just in case another dog becomes aggressive……Boris does not start problems, and mostly ignores other dogs……but sometimes he has to stand up for himself……a simple command puts that to rights, and he trots away alongside me like it never happened.

He does not like buses…….particularly ones that make a hiss noise and move their doors when we are walking past, and tends to hide behind me…..thus destroying the Rottie “fear nought” myth……he is actually a real character…..

He loves his treats, and he loves his cuddles too….(particularly cuddles and treats…..together).  He loves to sit at your feet and just have his ears tickled…….for maybe ten or twelve hours I guess…….or so it would seem.

I’ve been walking him for a little while now, and if I was not a full time professional, like my wife, meaning we are out of the house for long periods, he would right now be living with us!!!

I simply do not understand why nobody has fallen for Boris, and taken him home…….but I am torn between what is good for him, and what is fun for me……….so I will enjoy my time working with him, and look forward to the day he is homed with mixed feelings”.
