A chance remark saved the lives of two beautiful dogs by Bath Cats & Dogs Home.

A regular dog warden was scheduled to bring us three dogs from her round, and as the paperwork was being checked in our Animal Manager Jackie went to the van to pick up the dogs. In the cages behind were two dogs she had picked up on the way – an unusual  Samoyed and a Labrador.

Jackie casually asked where they were going to find out that they were headed to be put to sleep. It turned out that both dogs had been returned from another rescue home because the Samoyed was drinking too much water and possibly had a kidney infection, and the Labrador was too old and had a lump on her side.

Although all of our kennels were full, Jackie quickly took them in and found a paddock for them to wait until space was organised. Keira is seen playing here with Zipper who was one of the scheduled arrivals. There is also a video posted on our YouTube channel here.

Both dogs were checked into our veterinary suite. The Labrador, called Dayna, turned out to have a benign lump and the Samoyed, Keira, got the all clear for any kidney problems. If Jackie hadn’t gone to that van, these two gorgeous dogs would be dead for no reason.

Keira is currently reserved and ready to go soon, Zipper has already found a home and Dayna (below) is still looking.  Please come and meet her in C block.

Farewell to Smithy

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Smithy was with us at BCDH on and off for about seven years and was very much loved by all who knew him. He was a dog that did not like strangers and care had to be taken when getting to know him, but once a friend, you were never forgotten.

Due to his bad health, he was in constant pain with his arthritic hips and other age related problems, it was decided by all, including the vets, that as there was nothing else we could do for him medically, the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep. All of his friends and walkers came and paid their last respects the week before, including some of his past animal carers and he was finally laid to rest on Tuesday 27th April. It was all very peaceful, with those that knew and loved him there until the end; he was then buried in our cemetery.

Smithy was lucky enough to come to us, where we are happy to accommodate dogs with “slight issues”, as long as they are happy and healthy, I think it would be fair to say that no other home would have kept him for so long, but he was fine with us and had a very good life, being thoroughly indulged with treats, toys and new coats to keep him warm in the winter. The home will not be the same without him, but one thing is certain, we will never forget him.

In sickness and in health

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Our Poorly Pets Appeal has gained momentum – thank you to everyone who has donated so far. We have so far raised £12,163 (and 25 pence!) so we need one final push to reach our £15,000 target.

Here is where the money gets used:

kushdesk

Kush, a Jack Russell puppy, was brought in with a broken leg. His owners didn’t want to pay for the treatment so he came to us instead. After treatment in our on-site vet suite it is now healing well. He gets over-attached to anyone who looks after him – and as he is staying at a variety of staff homes each night then he has a lot of mummies and daddies! We are happy to say that he has a new owner waiting to take him home once he has fully recovered.

Rufus who has had to have an eye removed after a road traffic collision, and Holly was hand-reared here after losing her mother and siblings in a road traffic collision. Rufus we are happy to say has just found a home but Holly is still looking.
