tulip closeup 2 small

This is Tulip, a pretty saluki cross lurcher.

Soleful eyes? Check.

Fluffy ears? Check.

Four legs? Er, actually no.

Tulip was found abandoned with her leg shattered. We can only assume she was too expensive to fix, or useless for poaching or guarding, after having some sort of accident.

She was taken to a vets and had to have her leg amputated. With no owners claiming her, she came to us.

Imagine in one week losing your home, your owners and your leg and winding up in kennels with strange dogs and smells.

For the first week Tulip was withdrawn and reluctant to exercise and interact. Then she went through a phase of kicking back at everything, barking and growling at everyone to keep away. She was scared and unsure.

With patience and care from her animal carers and dedicated work experience girls like Hollie (pictured) Tulip is feeling more secure and happy. She even had her first groom and bath this week – look in the right-hand corner for the amount of hair that came off!

Although still nervous of men approaching her, she is bouncing back quickly and becoming a staff favourite. We have found that she loves sunbathing and belly rubs.

If you approach her kennel she may bark at you – try approaching slowly and sideways-on, and armed with small smelly treats! If she is unhappy with you being there, please back away and try again another day, we don’t want to push her too fast.

If you are interested in homing Tulip, please come in and meet her and speak to her animal carer.

happy family

Can you imagine finding a new friend so fast? Two volunteers tell us the story of the shock of falling for one of our dogs…

Having adopted three fantastic dogs from Bath Cats and Dogs Home ten years ago – two German Shepherds and one Collie, our world was devastated when in April we lost Pippa, our 13 year old German Shepherd.

We had registered to do the Wag Walk but the dog we had requested was unavailable so by chance we were given Tisha, a lovely German Shepherd.   It was love at first sight and after a couple of weeks of Tisha getting to know us and our other two dogs, she became part of our family.

Thank you to all the staff for your hard work and the love you give to your animals.

Paw Pal Picnic

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Sunday 18 July
Despite a gloomy start the weather stayed fine and the day was fun in the paddocks and fields. We had a parade of staffies and Paw Pals, with a chance to meet them all. A lot of tea was drunk and games played! It was lovely to see all of our supporters and some old doggie friends with their new families. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the day a success. We hope to do this again next year!

One hour from death.. now in a loving home

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

A month ago a volunteer rescued several dogs from their final moments in a pound and arranged to bring them to us, knowing that we would take them in until they found a home. The day before we rescued Keira and Dayna (read their story here).

We are happy to say that most have found a home and are now lying on sofas, running in parks and being thoroughly spoilt!

Weeto, Nell and Basset are still looking for a home. Click their names to find out more about them.

Lomas in his new home

Friday, July 9th, 2010
I am loving sleeping in my bed right now. I am shattered after walking for 1 Whole Hour, but I really enjoyed it because Amy (Parent No.3) was showing me how to feed the ducks!
As you probably know, I am a little bit naughty at times. Today, I turned my food bowl upside down and moved the SKY Box! I showed that I was sorry and Jo (Parent No.1) gave me big hugs and I will try and keep my temper when she works now. I was very excited today because Nina (Parent No.2) and Amy came to visit!
I have totally transformed since I have moved from ‘The Bath Dogs and Cats Home’. I have stopped being very stubborn on my walks. I think I have grown more loving, and I am losing lots of weight, because I have had lots of walks! Amy has took some pictures of me and her and we wanted to send them to you.
Who has taken my kennel now? Are my friends doing well and has anyone else found a new home? I have found a perfect one, and I am hopefully going to spend the rest of my life here. If we visit Bath anytime soon, I will tell my owners to see you, because I will give you HUMUGOUS hugs as I miss you lots.
I hope you miss me, as I miss you too.
Love you,
From Lomas xxxxx

> A lot of people have asked after Lomas, a lovely staffie who was with us for a while before finding his new owners. He took time out of his busy schedule to write to us (clever dog). We have Bull Breed Week from 12-18 July to celebrate our tough-looking dogs. Lomas’ story highlights that even though some dogs are with us for a long time, that doesn’t make them un-homeable, just special.

A special look for a home for Solo

solo sit web

click on any picture to see it larger

Solo has been with us for eight months, and we are very concerned for his mental and physical health here in kennels. We need to find a home for him very soon.

This lovely staffie boy is only 4 years-old but has chronic arthritis. Showing his stress by bouncing at the kennel bars, this exacerbates his condition. Once settled in a home we think he would be a different dog.

Solo is an independent lad who likes human company, but isn’t all licky like some staffies. He can handle short walks, and will need mental stimulation such as kongs or activity balls as he can’t get much exercise.

He adores toys, and will always have one in his mouth! Volunteer Rosie took him for a potter with his squeaky pig for this photo shoot. He loves treats and has learnt to sit on command, and we are sure will enjoy further training.

We have an assisted adoption scheme which means we will pay for his medication for his arthritis for the rest of his life. We hope this will stop his health being a barrier to finding a home.

If you are an experienced dog owner, without a dog at the moment, home most of the day and where any children are older and quieter then please come and meet this special lad and speak to his animal carer. You will find him on E block.
